A Step Toward True Agricultural Reform
November 6, 2024 – Montpelier, VT
The Libertarian Party of Vermont supports the nomination of Congressman Thomas Massie as the next Secretary of Agriculture. This would signal a meaningful shift toward policies that promote freedom, sustainability, and transparency in American agriculture, benefiting farmers, consumers, and the rural economy alike.
Congressman Massie, a steadfast advocate for individual rights and small government, has long supported reforms that empower local farmers, reduce burdensome regulations, and bring greater transparency to the food system. His work on initiatives such as the PRIME Act, which expands processing options for small farmers, and the Industrial Hemp Farming Act, which opens markets for alternative crops, underscores his dedication to the independence and self-sufficiency of American agriculture.
“Thomas Massie understands that when it comes to our food, the government should work with—not against—farmers and consumers,” said Olga Maria, Secretary, Libertarian Party of Vermont. “We believe that Congressman Massie’s leadership will give our family farms the freedom they need to thrive, allowing for innovation and the production of healthier, more sustainable food.”
Massie’s record demonstrates a commitment to deregulating agriculture in ways that favor smaller, family-owned farms over corporate interests, a stance that aligns with the Libertarian Party’s values. “His emphasis on local control, decentralization, and the promotion of regenerative farming practices represents a promising vision for Vermont farmers and for American agriculture as a whole,” said Anne Lepeltier, Chair, Libertarian Party of Vermont.
With Massie at the helm of the USDA, we anticipate changes that will empower farmers to be true stewards of their land, diversify their offerings, and operate without excessive government interference. For Vermont’s vibrant agricultural community, this nomination is a step in the right direction, providing hope for reduced red tape, a stronger emphasis on local food systems, and policies that serve the interests of the people, not bureaucracies.
The Libertarian Party of Vermont supports Congressman Massie’s appointment and looks forward to seeing him bring much-needed reform to American agriculture and to President -Elect Donald Trump following through on his promise to appoint libertarians to his cabinet.
