Rutland Area Warned of Potential Scam Tactics to Gain Access to Homes

Date: December 18, 2024
Location: Vermont

A recent public service announcement (PSA) from the Facebook group “Vermont Citizens Against Crime” has sparked widespread concern among residents. The group reported a disturbing trend of individuals approaching homes under false pretenses, attempting to draw homeowners outside or gain entry into their homes.

According to the PSA, the individuals often use excuses such as needing jumper cables, money for a cab, or access to a phone due to a supposed car breakdown. In some cases, they have reportedly brought children with them to appear more convincing.

The group warns that these encounters are potentially attempts to scope out homes for theft or other criminal activities. “We know Vermonters love to help people, but we want everyone to be aware that people have been using these tactics to get into your house or assess its vulnerabilities,” the post reads.

The group strongly advises residents to avoid opening their doors to strangers making such requests. Instead, they suggest calling the police or offering to contact a tow truck or other assistance from a safe distance. Special emphasis was placed on informing elderly residents and neighbors of these tactics, as they may be more vulnerable to such schemes.

Frustrations have also been expressed regarding local law enforcement’s reported lack of response to these calls. Many commenters on the post shared similar experiences and expressed concerns about their safety.

This PSA serves as a timely reminder for all Vermonters to remain vigilant and prioritize their safety. Authorities and community members alike are encouraged to share any relevant information that could help address this issue and support those affected.

For more information or to report suspicious activity, residents are urged to contact their local law enforcement agency. Stay safe, and spread the word to protect your community.
