July 1, 2026:
Impaired driving, domestic violence and property crime filled Vermont’s blotters this past week, alongside two cases that gripped their communities: a two-day manhunt in Brandon after a double stabbing, and an hours-long hostage standoff in White River Junction. Troopers also worked a fatal off-road crash in Orleans County and a run of ATM attacks in Addison County. Here is a county-by-county look at the week’s verifiable cases.
Addison County: In Middlebury, police say they arrested a local man who took an axe to a bank ATM in a failed attempt to break in and rob it. Investigators used surveillance video and routine police work to identify the suspect, the latest in a recent run of ATM thefts around the county. Read more
Bennington County: Vermont State Police are investigating an overnight burglary at Billmont’s Country Store in Stamford. Troopers say an unknown person forced entry at about 3:20 a.m. June 28 and stole items of value. No arrest has been made; anyone with information is asked to contact the Shaftsbury Barracks. Caledonia County: State police say Jay Harrington, 41, of Campton, N.H., drove off Kirby Road in East Burke and struck a guardrail on June 27 with his 8-year-old son in the vehicle. Troopers reported signs of impairment and arrested him on DUI and cruelty-to-a-child charges. He is due in court July 13. Read more
Chittenden County: Two Williston residents face charges after thefts from vehicles in Richmond. Police say Trevor Lacross, 35, is charged with unlawful trespass, grand larceny and fraudulent use of credit cards, and Angel Robidoux, 27, with fraudulent use of credit cards. Both were cited to appear July 14. Read more
Franklin County: State police cited a Richford woman for simple assault after a June 22 disturbance on River Street. Troopers say Dorcas Button, 41, caused bodily injury to 60-year-old Stephen Russell, also of Richford. She was ordered to appear in Franklin County court July 28. Read more
Lamoille County: Troopers are seeking information after roughly $10,000 in supplies was stolen from a construction site off Route 12 in Elmore. State police say posts and stainless-steel cabling belonging to CT Stoneworks & Excavating were taken overnight between June 22 and 23. No arrest has been made. Read more

Orange County: Troopers who found a disabled vehicle on Interstate 89 in Randolph on June 26 say they arrested Hussein A. Mohamed, 19, of Springfield, Mass., on a charge of possession of cocaine with intent to sell. Police say he also had an active in-state warrant and was lodged at a correctional facility. Read more
Orleans County: A Lowell man is charged with DUI with death resulting after a side-by-side rollover killed his passenger. State police say Randy Lemieux II, 27, was driving a Polaris RZR on Newton Road late June 25 when it overturned, killing Maddison Hayden, 22, of Woodbury. Police cite speed and impairment as suspected factors; Lemieux was held on $10,000 bail. Read more
Rutland County: A Brandon woman was arrested after a two-day manhunt tied to a double stabbing. Police say Tamara Stone, 51, returned to a Triangle Court home June 27 where two relatives had been stabbed days earlier, called 911, and was taken into custody. She is charged with two counts of attempted second-degree murder and aggravated domestic assault, is held without bail, and pleaded not guilty June 29. Read more
Washington County: State police arrested a Montpelier man on a second-offense DUI charge after a report of a disabled vehicle on Interstate 89 North in Berlin on June 23. Troopers say Joseph F. Henry, 38, was impaired and also charged with giving false information to a police officer. He is due in court July 9. Read more
Windham County: A Newfane man was cited for impersonating an officer after state police say he posed as law enforcement in downtown Newfane on two June evenings. Troopers identified Frederick Berard, 59, following the June 17 and 18 incidents. He is scheduled to appear in Windham County court July 28. Read more
Windsor County: A woman held more than 12 hours inside a White River Junction home was freed early June 29, and police arrested the man accused of restraining her. Hartford police say Justin Lamb, 31, was taken into custody around 3 a.m. after officers used drones and noise devices to end the standoff on Sykes Mountain Avenue. He is charged with second-degree unlawful restraint, domestic assault and resisting arrest, and was held without bail. Read more

Berlin Barracks — DUI, Negligent Operation
Responding to a report of an erratic driver on Interstate 89 in Williamstown on June 22, troopers say they stopped and arrested Francis Irish, 43, of South Royalton on suspicion of first-offense DUI and negligent operation. He was cited to appear in Orange County court July 15. Read more
Williston Barracks — Excessive Speed
During radar enforcement on Route 108 in Fletcher on June 22, troopers say they clocked a vehicle at 89 mph in a 50 mph zone. The driver, Isaiah Burns, 20, of St. Albans, was cited for excessive speed with a court date set for August 3. Read more
St. Johnsbury (Troop A East BCI) — Aggravated Disorderly Conduct
State police cited David Goodwin, 22, into Caledonia County court on June 23 after they say he threw an unknown liquid onto a correctional officer at the Northeast Regional Correctional Facility, striking the officer in the face and chest. Read more
Royalton Barracks — Fatal Fire Investigation Update
Investigators identified the two people who died in a June 17 house fire on North Common in Chelsea as Max Quayle, 57, and Karen Snyder, 71, both residents of the home. The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation. Read more
B Troop — Criminally Suspended License Citations
Troopers across B Troop cited several drivers for operating with a criminally suspended license during the reporting week, including motorists stopped in Panton, Bennington, Castleton, West Rutland and Randolph, and a Norwich crash. Each was cited to appear in county court this summer. Read more
