Privacy Policy
Last updated July 26, 2026
FYIVT is an independent, self-hosted Vermont news site. Our approach to your privacy is simple: we report the news; we don't report on you.
What we don't do
No tracking scripts. No analytics services. No advertising pixels. No social-media beacons. No cookies for tracking. We do not sell, rent, trade, or share reader information with anyone, because we deliberately collect almost none.
What we collect, and why
Server logs. Like nearly every website, our web server records standard access logs (IP address, page requested, browser type, timestamp). We use them for security and to count readership in aggregate. Logs are rotated monthly and stay on our own server; they are never shared with anyone.
Newsletter. If you subscribe, we store your email address, your delivery preferences, and whether you're a supporter — nothing else. Every email includes an unsubscribe link that works immediately, no questions asked.
Comments. If you comment, we store the name and comment you submit so we can display them, plus the email address you confirm with — it's used for that one-time confirmation and for moderation, and is never displayed or shared.
Payments. Memberships and gifts are processed by Stripe; card details go to Stripe, never to us. We keep only what's needed to honor your membership.
Fonts. All typefaces are embedded and served directly from fyivt.com. Pages make no third-party requests.
The FYIVT app
The FYIVT app (Android and iOS) follows the same rule: we report the news, we don't report on you.
No accounts, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking — same as the site.
Push alerts (optional). If you turn on weather alerts, your device registers an anonymous push token with Google's Firebase Cloud Messaging so we can deliver them. The token identifies your device for delivery only; it is not linked to your name, email, or anything else. Turn alerts off and it goes inert. This is the only thing resembling data the app produces.
Location. The app can use your device's location to position radar features (like estimating when rain reaches you). That computation happens entirely on your phone. Your location is never transmitted to us or anyone else.
Content. Weather and news are fetched from fyivt.com over HTTPS, the same as visiting the site.
Data deletion
Want anything we hold about you deleted — your subscription, your comments, your membership record? Email editor@fyivt.com from the address in question (or name the comments) and it will be removed promptly. This is also the data-deletion process for anyone who has interacted with FYIVT through our social-media apps.
