Hearing on S.321 Continues Wednesday Morning: Your Contacts Needed ASAP

At 9 AM, on Wednesday, March 11, the Senate Natural Resources Committee has scheduled discussion, with a possible vote, on Bill S.321, which has new restrictions on Bear Hunting with dogs and F&W Board restructuring.

This morning, March 9, Senators Chris Bray and Ruth Hardy had a public session in Addison County.  Some issues of contention, in Sections 15-18 in S.321, were brought up by Terry Williams, the Southern VP of the Vermont Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs.

* Terry made the point that the hunting of bears with hounds has a long tradition in Vermont.  He also pointed out that the Vermont  F&W Dept.  in an attempt to avoid having to destroy these bears. often calls upon the bearhound hunters to help in dealing with nuisance bears,  The Vermont Bearhounds Association has long provided substantial support for responsible wildlife management and safe hunting training.

*  S.321 also has serious issues about an unnecessary and counter productive reorganization of the VT F&W Board.  The VT F&W Board functions just fine.  S.321 is also on the agenda for Friday, for yet another bite at passing the bill, if it did not pass on Wednesday.

There could be pressure to pass out S.321 on Friday, March 13th, as Friday is Crossover Day.  Most bills that have not passed out of the committee of origin by the end of Crossover Day do not have to be taken up by the other house this year.
