Vermont Students Protest…. For Mandatory Masks!

On March 2, students in Vermont’s capital plan a walk-out and march to demand that school mask mandates not be lifted. Vermont officials recently recommended that schools with an 80% vaccination rate need not require masks, but these students are irate and demand continued, even heightened, mandates.

Titled “Protest Against Lifting Mask Mandates” on an online Vermont community forum  for the Montpelier High School, handouts and infographics headed “SAFETY OVER NORMALCY” proclaimed:

Join your fellow students and community members in a walk out and march to city hall out to protest the mask mandate being lifted and general lack of COVID safety at MHS.

Vermont has been a pretty safe area to weather COVID, and healthy children are of course at miniscule risk. Strangely, it appears children at this school can simply decide to walk out of class and walk around the city, so perhaps the kids will simply self-impose mask mandates. Mask-lovers can be pretty autocratic, at any age!

Vermont is already established as a place where the young hate free speech and physically assault professors with whom they disagree. (Though, nearby Dartmouth College is vying for leadership in the cancel-speech movement). But these protests are thematic opposites of the causes of 1960’s hippie kids – this ain’t Grandma’s social justice revolution…..

Students demanding totalitarian protection (while defying rules to attend class and remain on school property) are increasingly common in the indoctrinated Generation Duh. Perhaps future protest events will call for evening curfew enforcement, increased homework, banning alcohol at football games, raising the driving and drinking ages, or a crack-down on premarital sex. The irony is that those shifts would all be beneficial for youth, and even save lives – the inverse of masking.

For healthy children, flu is more deadly than COVID. Whether or not masking effectively prevents transmission, the practice certainly does cause alienation, anxiety, and other potential psychological harms, and for some children physical complaints as well – what of those concerns? One event infographic proclaims:

MASKS ARE ONE OF THE ONLY WAYS PROVEN TO CONSISTENTLY PROTECT PEOPLE FROM COVID THROUGHOUT THE PANDEMIC. MASKING ONLY WORKS WHEN EVERYONES WEARING THEM. IF WE LIFT THE MASK MANDATES AT SCHOOLS NOW EVEN WITH HIGH VACCINATION RATES COVID CASES WILL RISE PUTTING OUR COMMUNITIES AT RISK….

The mask-cult students, doubtless conditioned by the histrionic terrors of their unbalanced “progressive” parents, seek to “protect themselves” from other children with exposed facial features. But as with vaccines, if masks work these fears are irrational….. “Vaccines only work if everyone gets jabbed!” “Masks must be universally worn because vaccines don’t work as advertised!”

The effort is petitioning for more than mere mandatory mask measures. One call to action lists specific demands which include “reinstate regular surveillance testing,” provide “alternate lunch areas” and “alternate schooling,” N95 masks and hand sanitizers, and to “enforce the mask policy and not let students consistently wear masks incorrectly.” Papers, testing, stop-points, mask enforcement…. Sounds like reform school, or Catholic boarding school, only stricter. The phrase “Jawohl!” comes to mind.

This student “defiance demanding compliance” includes nerdy threats of low-risk insurrection:

WE NEED TO SHOW ADMIN AND VERMONT GOVERNMENT THAT WE WONT SHOW UP IF THEY DONT KEEP US SAFE. A WALK OUT IS A COVID SAFE WAY OF PROTESTING THE LACK OF COVID SAFTEY IN SCHOOL. IF YOU WANT SCHOOL TO BE COVID SAFE WALK OUT WITH US.

It is consistent that risk-averse children would be equally risk-averse protesters: surely hand sanitizers will be available in the Arctic Vermont temperatures, albeit frozen solid. Aside from naively perceiving that masking is “the only way” to protect healthy, vaccinated minors from COVID, organizers propose that their valiant stand will deter the government from further encroachments against their mask-confinement. One meme defiantly declares:

THERE NEGLECT TO PROVIDE A SAFE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT IS UNACCEPTABLE AND ALLOWING IS WILL ENCOU ADMINISTRATION TO CONTINUE THIS HARMFUL PATTERN.

Alas, Vermont’s Governor Scott indicates that his administration is headed in the opposite “health and safety” direction from this protest’s demands for tyranny:

“Schools should know this is only the first step. In the very near future if all goes to plan, we intend to recommend lifting the mask requirement recommendation altogether,” Scott said.

Indeed, one Vermont school district never approved mask mandates because a majority of informed parents were supported by a sensible school administration, and there do not appear to be any statistically increased child die-offs in that school district. Students and parents now screeching for more rules and restrictions seem to have lost their reason along with awareness of scientific facts. He who would trade liberty for security deserves neither: he who would irrationally do so deserves a kick in the derriere.

In time, it is to be hoped that the unjustified hysteria with which so many far-left delusionists have abused their children will abate, and life will return to some semblance of normalcy. (Though, many disenchanted mask-worshipers could become nouveaux Stockholm-Syndrome-style homeschoolers.) If masking histrionics persist, presumably the rebellious structure-seekers will call for mandatory flu, tetanus and Dengue fever vaccinations – better safe than sorry! Bodily autonomy and vaccine side effects be damned!

This is a terrible tragedy for America’s youth: so frightened of death that they are renouncing a meaningful life. They protest climate change, George Floyd, trans-rights, and other upside-down morals. Flash this mob back to 1969, and they’d be burning Constitutions, demanding a universal draft for Vietnam, and petitioning to “decarcerate” Charles Manson.

Vermont is poised to permit fresh air to freely re-enter the lungs of students, germs and all. With mask mandates eased, children can relax in true “normalcy,” if only for a nostalgic respite from incessant horrorization of life.

Critical thinking is unmaskable.
